COVER STORY - BUSINESS HOTELS

Ethics: How to be a good buyer

Australian Federal Police senior contract manager, travel, Ms Chris Telfer, said she lived by a code of ethics and integrity that enhanced her relationship with suppliers and ensured that all are treated fairly.

  • Please do not offer me gifts, free accommodation or flights during contract review time as refusal may offend;
  • Do not tell your peers about my rates, travellers or company without asking me first;
  • Do not put me down as a referee for new business you are trying to obtain without asking me first;
  • Do not block out rooms during large events and charge me double – I am there all year round when times are tough;
  • You will earn my respect if you follow the above;
  • I will not select a hotel because of personal preference or the boss likes it;
  • I do not accept lavish or expensive gifts from preferred/non-preferred suppliers;
  • I do not release rate information to the market;
  • I do not please everyone in selecting my suppliers;
  • I do not blame a supplier for a complaint without knowing the whole picture.
