COUNTRY REPORT - THAILAND

What's New

Hyatt's new concept
Grand Hyatt Erawan has christened a new concept in meeting facilities - the US$2.5 million Residence. The 950m2 facility consists of a cluster of four meeting rooms and communal spaces including a private dining area with an open kitchen. Director of marketing, Mr Sammy Carolus, said the comfortable, homey space had already proven popular with corporate guests.

Sukhothai renovates
The Sukhothai Hotel Bangkok's executive meeting facilities have undergone more than US$200,000 in renovations to create three purpose-built spaces that can each be divided for boardroom-style meetings of 12 to 36 people. The rooms have been given the feel of a comfortable executive office, with custom designed modular leather furnishings and Jim Thompson silk. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the hotel pool for lots of natural light.

New railway station
Bangkok's notorious rush hour has been somewhat alleviated by the opening of the 20km subway system extending from the Hualamphong Railway Station in a broad arc around the business district to the north of the city. The route crosses the BTS SkyTrain at Silom Road, Sukhumvit Road and again at Chatuchak Park. Hotels benefiting from the new route include Sofitel Central Plaza Bangkok, Dusit Thani Hotel, Chaophya Park Hotel and Fortune Grand Mercure Hotel.

D'Sens at Dusit Thani
Dusit Thani Bangkok has renovated its 22nd-floor restaurant, D'Sens. Seating up to 100 guests for intimate dining with a view, the restaurant serves nouvelle French cuisine with a Mediterranean influence. Opened by Montpellier's Le Jardin des Sens owners Jacques and Laurent Pourcel, the restaurant has received the fine-dining accolade of three Michelin stars.

Met draws hip crowd
Metropolitan Hotel Bangkok's Met Bar members rub fashionable elbows with rising stars amid a daring décor meant to be a backdrop for beautiful people looking their best. Young Thai artists are given wall space and music is provided by well-known DJs. Membership is free, but by invitation only. Members may bring up to three guests but the club has been known to be flexible towards regulars.
